so tell us. how did you meet your hubby?

I swear I had this topic in my blog calendar to be written about.

Okay. Well I can’t top that story but I will tell you how I met my husband (17 years ago)…… (sorry in advance for the long post but you can’t leave out the good parts)

I have to preface the story. I was living in Pasadena, California and my girlfriend Margo and I used to frequent a pool hall on the weekends, mostly Saturday afternoons. This was not a billiards hall. Or a cute bar with pool tables. Nope. It was a pool hall that was usually filled with blue collar workers and illegal immigrants. But we loved to play pool and it was cheap fun. We felt safe because the owner watched over us.

It was a Friday, August 16, 1991 and I had a long hard week so a group of us went out to dinner/drinks. We stayed out pretty late and I was getting tired. Margo came up with the bright idea of going to play pool (I learned she was frequently this establishment at night). I said, “No. I’m tired, let’s go home”. She begged me to go. I rarely ever went to the pool hall at “night” being a safety girl and all. But for some reason she talked me into it. Am I ever glad she did.

When we walked in – I spotted my future husband. Let’s just say he had the only blond hair in the place. He was playing pool with a mutual friend and somehow we ended up playing partners. He was, of course, “stuck with me” (which I later learned was orchestrated by him. I felt bad because I really sucked at pool. But he was awesome. Like, a pool shark! So he started teaching me how to shoot).

Let’s just say, cupid didn’t shoot an arrow at my heart when I first met him. Come ‘on girls. We’re at a pool hall. ‘Nuff said? But I couldn’t help but laugh the entire time we played (which was four hours, we closed the place). I’ve never laughed so hard and anyone knows…that is a direct road to my heart. I warmed up to his personality and quick wit.

When the evening concluded, we were standing there somewhat awkwardly (you know those moments) and before my future hubby could say anything, Margo speaks up, “So you gonna ask her for her number or what”? Hmph. My future husband glared at her wearily. Then he turns to me and says, “I never ask a lady for her number, but here is mine. I would love to take you to dinner sometime. But I’ll leave it up to you to call me”.

I was speechless.

No guy had ever told me that before. I usually would end up giving out fake numbers because you would get asked for your phone number so frequently. I smiled, took his number and replied, “Tell you what. Why don’t we meet down here again and you can teach me some more about how to play pool”. Ever the safety girl. That’s me.

To wrap it up…. we discovered that his older sister and my older brother worked together at the same business in the same department for years. We knew the same people! He lived about a mile from the pool hall and would play pool there all the time! How we missed each other, I’ll never know. His family and my family were members of the same religious church (a secular church that used to have branches worldwide).

It was meant to be. Did I mentioned he called his sister the day after he met me and told her that he met the woman he was going to marry? I didn’t feel that way, I made him work for my affection. Work really hard…..3 months later he asked me to marry him and I accepted! teehee. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a good pool player that can make me laugh! Fifteen years later (this July 4th is our anniversary) he is still making me laugh!

What about you? Where, how did you meet your fiancé, husband, significant other? We want to know! Leave a comment!

  1. The fiancé and I met at a Rascal Flatts concert back in 2005. My friend and I decided to take a spur of the moment trip to Cincinnati to see one of our favorite bands and spend the night with one of our old sorority sisters. The concert was over before we knew it and we needed to find our way to the bars to “waste some time” before our sorority sister was done babysitting. In our attempt to obtain directions, we stumbled upon a group of very good looking men that were actually looking for a ride to the bars. It was fate. He put his arm around me on the way to the bars and from then on out, we were inseparable. Needless to say, Rascal Flatts is our favorite music group. 😆

  2. Saundra, what a hilarious way to meet your husband! What did your parents say when told them that you met your husband at a pool hall? 😉

My husband and I met through personal ads twice! The first time was in 1996. We met in person once, and then never spoke again. Let’s just say that sparks didn’t fly then. In 2000, he answered my ad again! We hit it off much better this time, and he proposed after we dated for about a month. He knew a good thing when he saw it. 🙂

  3. The first day of a new job, I bumped into my future husband in the hall. No matter how hard I tried to contain myself, I was so “into him” from that very moment.

As life would have it, he and I were both in serious relationships with other people. My Catholic guilt was tearing me apart, but I knew in my heart that this guy was my future husband.

A couple of months later, we had to work together on a project for a couple of weeks — the more time I spent with him, the harder it got for me to resist the temptation of pursuing another girl’s guy. I couldn’t take it anymore. So I broke up with my boyfriend of four years and pursued my then, future husband. He didn’t stand a chance. I knew that it had to be love (or a fatal attraction ) because pursuing a guy was definitely not my MO.

Two months later, he broke up with his girlfriend, and started dating me.

We will be married 12 years in August, and I am still so incredibly “into him.”

  4. My husband loves this story. I told him he was going to marry me, then I called him chicken! We had been dating forever…at least to me it seemed like forever. 1 1/2 years is forever when you are 25 and the last of your group of friends to get married. Your friends are all married and having babies…and you wonder what the heck happened to me??

I woke up on Valentine’s Day, very displeased to be TWENTY FIVE and unmarried. 😡 Poor Nick never knew what hit him…I had been up hours before he ever thought about getting up. Pacing….stewing….ANGRY about it. I remember getting him up, saying we needed to talk. My speech went something like “LOOK! I am 25-years-old and I am getting married to someone this year – maybe you, maybe not – but I am getting married!” “So are you gonna be there?” 🙄 I asked. “What are you, chicken?” 😆 That was February 14th, 2003. We were married June 7, 2003 on Daytona Beach. I would love to tell you it was the best day of my life – and it was – thus far but things keep getting better and better 😀

Saturday we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary at Cheeseburger in Paradise with our friends and family, and most importantly our three-year-old son,…all because I called him ‘chicken’.

  5. Forgot to mention how we met…originally I was a waitress in a bar he was playing in (my second job 10 years ago—)..we started dating 7 years ago after I saw him out at Fast Eddy’s and he said “hey, give me a call if you ever want to go do something.” Didn’t give me his number, but I found it and called him the very next day…..and they lived happily ever after 😆

  6. I met my husband in college. He was the star Runningback and I was a dancer for our Marching Band. He was known as a lady’s man and I knew to stay clear away from him. One night at a club after crossing line for my sorority, we bumped into each other and I rolled my eyes at him and he winked at me. 🙄 Little did I know that he told his roommate the same night that I was going to be his wife. I found this out at our wedding.

A few days later after football practice, he was riding his bike (with no seat) in front of the student union and stopped me to “try” to win me over. We talked for almost an hour. 😆 I tried my best to act like I wasn’t interested but I sure in heck was. A few weeks later, my sister and I bumped into him at the movie theater and he tried to give me his phone number but I wouldn’t take it, so he gave it to my sister. I couldn’t hold out anymore-I called him the next evening and that was history–I was hooked.

We will be celebrating 5 years of marriage this Saturday, June 14.

Thanks Saundra for this great post. Happy Planning.

  7. I heart all these stories!!!! Too funny! Keep ’em coming everyone!

Mandy – it’s about time you posted here!

Tish – nice try at playing hard to get!

And I never knew Kay was a (home)wrecker….what’s meant to be is meant to be!

Jessica – are you going to play Rascal Flatts at your wedding?

Lilia – thanks for posting..that is the neatest story and ‘fate’

  8. I met my husband when one of my closest friends said “Hey Lynn, I want you to meet this cute guy I have a crush on.” Oops! In his defense he had no idea she liked him when he asked her to set us up, and being the great friend she is, she had no problem with us dating – at least not after she realized that their personalities clashed and they would have never worked. Now we are both married with kids and are still friends.

  9. I love this post!

Just like Kawania, I met my husband when I started a new job in 1991. It was my first full time job right out of high school. I noticed him right away because he was the cutest guy in the department but I played it cool and pretended not to notice him. So, to get my attention, he threw a balled up piece of paper at me on his way out the door. I said “How old are you?” (because it was so elementary school). Then one day, while we were working mandatory overtime on a Saturday, we got to know each other on a more casual level. Not only was he cute, but he was also very funny.

We had our first date in 1992 and we’re still together 16 years and 2 children later.
