It was 13 years ago today that I walked down the aisle and said “I do” to the best man I’ve ever known. We had originally planned an out-of-town wedding (just us and our bestman/maid of honor), but when my Mom got ill six months before the wedding – we changed our mind.
Fourth of July has always been my favorite holiday, I love summer and fireworks! Since we were in Southern California we had no problems finding a country club who had a gazebo that extended out on a lake next to their golf course. It was the perfect location. With a small guest list of just family and close personal friends, we said our vows in the late afternoon. And for humor, the swans and ducks (who live there) walked around behind us during the ceremony.
Instead of renting out a ballroom, we rented their entire bar at the facilities for our sit-down dinner reception! We wanted our wedding to be light-hearted and fun. So the table decorations were Uncle Sam’s hats with sparklers, balloons (yes, balloons…but it fit the theme and it was 1993) and confetti. As favors we wrapped red, white, & blue jelly beans (one of my favorite candies).
Nothing traditional – our wedding cake was cheesecakes and my dress was um, very modern! In the middle of the evening, we stopped the music and everyone went outside to view a spectacular fireworks display (courtesy of the public park that was next door – but my guests thought I had arranged it)! Now that was smart planning! It was a beautiful day and if I could do it all over again, I would (but without balloons -haha).
