browser wars (and choices)

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

It came to my attention that our blog doesn’t work in all the browsers! This was unfortunately realized while I was sitting with a potential client. We’ve tried hard to fix the situation, but we are still having a few difficulties with Internet Explorer 6.0. (if you notice the first post is pushed way down on the home page. yikes!)

So as a public announcement and wanna-be-geek-like, I thought it would be a good idea to update everyone on possible browsers you could use to surf the net! This is our take on the situation, right or wrong.

internet explorer 7.0Internet Explorer 7.0

Fact: 60% of our users use Internet Explorer. While 63% are using IE 7.0 the remaining are using IE 6.0.

The most common browser out there, mostly because it comes automatically with your PC and most users simply don’t change it. True story: Microsoft owns the PC world. It’s a lot more stable that Explorer 6.0. So if you haven’t upgraded, you really should. You can do so right here. It’s a HUGE improvement over IE6.0.

However, what most users don’t know is the massive amounts of spyware an IE browser puts onto your computer, slowing it down to a point where you want to throw your mouse across the room. Hopefully you have wireless one.

If anyone doesn’t know what spyware is….to put it simply, think of them as orange construction cones. Imagine a hundred of those in your house right now. Try to walk from your kitchen to the living room. You have to manuever around the cones. Same thing with your computer processor, it slooooooooows it down and sometime can have viruses.

firefox logos Mozilla Firefox:

Fact: 31% of our users use Firefox as their web browser.

Mozilla is my preferred browser which I use on my desktop (and what I’m looking at right now typing this post). Mozilla was introduced to challenge Windows monopoly in the market with their Explorer browser. Competition is always good. So Mozilla hates Explorer and Explorer returns the favor and hates Mozilla. (Just look at their logo…hehe).

A more stable browser, they were first to come up with opening new windows as “tabs” (at least in the PC world). This browser is NOT a fan of spyware and will block pop up windows, etc. Download it, and stick with it for about two weeks. You’ll NEVER go back to Explorer. Don’t worry bookmarks are easily imported. And they always are coming up with free add-ins to download that makes your web surfing easy!

Download this baby right here!

safari logo\ Safari:

Fact: 7% of our users use Safari as their web browser.

Safari is a web browser that was built for Mac’s. You gotta love Mac users. They know they have a superior product and they don’t mind rubbing it in everyone’s face. They are like the cool sorority you always wanted to pledge for. I would personally switch in a heartbeat but all my purchased and pirated software is PC based. I don’t want to start over!

Anyway, Safari is now out for PC’s. I use it on my laptop and REALLY like it. But I won’t lie, it is very Mac’ish in design. For most people, it would be difficult to make the change. But…………it is Ferrari fast. Compared to IE which is like a Hybrid car….there is simply no comparison.

Download it here, and just try it out!

There is also Netscape (yawn) and Opera (don’t know much about it and frankly, not really interested). Best thing that all these browsers are free, so you can try them out. You can also read reviews of all these browsers here. It’s written so it won’t hurt your head!
